In less than two years, a retired Navy employee shed more than 200 pounds without the help of expensive pills, dangerous fad diets, door-delivered meals or surgery.
Now Philip Hamrick, 60, wants to share his secrets with other budget-conscious Americans who need to shrink their waistlines, not their wallets.

“Everyone wants something easy and fast,” Hamrick, who lives in the Washington, D.C. area, told the Daily News. “And the diet industry is making a killing off of it.”
It’s no secret that nutrition and exercise are the key to a slimmer, healthier figure, but Americans still spend more than $40 billion each year on diet-related products. Hamrick hopes to drive his point home with his new self-help book, “The Easiest Weight Management and Smart Eating Program for Weight Loss.”

“I’m preaching different techniques,” he said. “Yeah, eat healthy, but more importantly, eat smart.”

For Hamrick, eating smart doesn’t mean avoiding double cheeseburgers. It means cutting those double cheeseburgers in half and saving some for later, or making that your main meal of the day.

“There’s no way I’m going to go the rest of my life without eating cake or pie or something unhealthy,” he explained.
Hamrick, a former computer specialist for the U.S. Navy, has struggled with his weight since birth, but the problem worsened as he got older. In his mid-50s, the scale tipped 440 pounds — morbidly obese for his 5-foot-8 frame.

“I felt my heart beat through my kidneys,” Hamrick said, recalling the terrifying moment he realized he had to change.
“I knew that something had to be done or I wouldn’t last long. I couldn’t run more than 10 yards; I couldn’t stand for very long.”

At that point, Hamrick was 58 years old and eating between 4,000 and 5,000 calories a day.
“You’re invincible when you’re young,” he said of his late start to lose weight. “You never think about what’s going to happen to you. As I get older, I know I’m destructible.”
Hamricks did his own research and saw a doctor, then started by slashing 500 calories from his daily intake.
“I knew you can’t lose it fast,” he said. “You can’t go on a binge diet or starvation diet. You’ll end up breaking.”
For Hamrick, slow and steady won the race. He continued to lower his calorie intake and added some light exercise. He now weighs 210 pounds, and eats between 1,800 and 2,000 calories per day — whatever he wants.
His book discusses portion control, what to order at fast food joints, how to boost your metabolism and the value of food diaries.
Bold statement: I don't know if ANYONE in Hollywood is as on fire as Man of Steel star Henry Cavill. Like if anyone were to ever have the whole tall, dark, and handsome thing nailed down pat, it's 100 percent him. While Man of Steel reviews are slowly rolling out, so are the details of Henry Cavill's intense diet for the flick. First, we heard all about the 30-year-old starving himself to look good for the shirtless scenes. Now, Cavill's opening up to People saying there was more to the diet than just skipping meals.

The good part? He didn't have to completely cut out any specific foods. The bad part? He did have to cut his daily calories a LOT. As in, in half. Apparently getting in Superman shape takes dedication.

Cavill told People that his diet consisted of 2,500 calories a day -- down from the 5,000 he used to consume. He also said he worked out an hour every morning before filming.

Sounds kind of standard for someone trying to drop weight, yes? Sure. But think of it this way: Caville is a big guy who burned a lot of calories regularly between his workouts and the intense action on set. In the scheme of things, 2,500 calories is not all that much, especially for someone of his size.

Cavill is clearly amped to be done with the Superman-style eating and exercise routine, though. After the movie finally wrapped, the star told People that he splurged on three delicious foods -- an apple pie, a tub of ice cream, and a full pizza.

The things I would do to consume an apple pie with Henry! With or without that splurge, sounds like now that this Superman gig is all wrapped up, someone is in perfect shape for another sexy role (ahem, Christian Grey perhaps?).
