A new study published in the October issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that study participants eating 1.5 ounces of dry-roasted, lightly salted almonds every day experienced reduced hunger and improved dietary vitamin E and monounsaturated (“good”) fat intake without increasing body weight.[i]

Snacking has become nearly universal behavior in the United States, with an estimated 97% of Americans consuming at least one snack per day.[ii] In light of increasing snacking frequency[ii] and snack size[iii] among U.S. adults, combined with continued increases in obesity rates and widespread nutrient shortfalls, it becomes increasingly important to identify snacks that pose little risk for weight gain while providing health benefits. 2013. The year of flying cars and private space travel right? My broken phone that's lying on the floor next to the chair has more computing power than existed in the whole world 40 years ago  We are no longer talking about how to reach space, but what mundane tasks to do when we get there. Hmm, well, there still is a big demand for real estate with a view.

But people smarter than me estimate that 20% of the worlds population has almost zero access to clean drinking water. Priorities, shmiorities. (shmiorities Jon, really?) Yeah really.

Well, thankfully, there are still quite a few more people out there, also smarter than me, that are working on solutions for this problem. If you haven't heard of these ideas before, they are quite sciency (Yeah, I did it again. So?)  Lets check out number one.

1. Self filling water bottles

This idea is number 1 for no other reason than it's my favorite concept. A water bottle that gathers moisture from the ambient environment and fills itself for your drinking pleasure. NBD Nano is the name of the company, and I honestly believe they could change the world.The design is actually science at the nano-particle level. Using materials originally designed by MIT researchers to be used as water harvesting surfaces, they actually use a design that is extremely hydrophobic (water literally can not cling to it, it scatters away) and manipulate the surface texture in such away that it traps water. I won't venture into the extreme details, but it's a lot more complicated than just stretching some plastic over a tube and calling it a day. Unless your family all lives close by, there's a good chance you'll be traveling over the holidays. You probably know that travel can destroy your healthy eating plans. If you're not careful you can arrive home carrying a few extra pounds. It's too easy to justify your lapses by saying, "Oh well, I am on vacation!" Plus, it's often hard to find healthy foods while you're traveling.

Pack your own snacks. No matter whether you're traveling by car or plane you're going to need to do this. The food at airports is not only fattening but also very expensive. However, layovers are boring. So if you don't have something like nuts or a piece of fruit to snack on you'll probably crack. Heaven forbid you do that near a Cinnabon! So be prepared by having your own healthy snacks to fight those cravings.

Take a walk around the airport. Also, while you're waiting for your next flight, why not get your body moving with a brisk 20 minute walk? Then buy a magazine or a book to entertain yourself while you wait. A bottle of water or a coffee will often go a long way to fight cravings.

Don't forget to drink plenty of water. No matter how or where you're traveling, keep bottles of water handy. As soon as you get dehydrated you'll think you're hungry and feel tired. That's a recipe for diet disaster. You'll cave in to the nearest snack bar. So drink plenty of water!

If you're going to eat at a restaurant then order grilled chicken and veggies. Fish is another good option (grilled, not fried, of course!). If you get a salad, ask them to leave the croutons off and ask for dressing on the side. Some chain restaurants now offer healthy (or healthier) options on their menu and list calorie and carbohydrate count. If you're traveling with someone, consider splitting a dinner. Portion sizes are often much too large for one person and you won't want to ask for a to-go box when you're traveling. So you'll just keep eating until you're stuffed if you're not careful

Traveling by car is a little easier because you can pack an ice chest with fruit, veggies and sandwiches of lean meat on whole wheat bread.

Skip the elevator and go for the stairs. Also, bring along your swimsuit and spend some time in the hotel pool. But don't just float or sunbathe! Swim a few laps and get your heart pumping. This is a great low-impact exercise.
