There are 44 million uninsured people in this nation and another 56 million who, although may have health insurance, live in areas without doctors and basic health services. 1 Health Centers play a vital role in helping these individuals and families have access to preventative care, health education, and necessary immunizations, prescriptions and more. 1
Coast2Coast Rx believes that no one should have to jeopardize their health simply because they can’t afford the health care services they need. Like the Coast2Coast Rx card, a local health center can be an important resource in helping individuals, families and communities improve their health outcomes. To ensure easy access to the savings available with the free discount prescription card, Coast2Coast Rx offers the card through participating cities, counties and townships, in partnership with many United Way and other nonprofit organizations, and even available to print on its website – http://coast2coastrx.com/index.php/print-free-card.

In fact, the positive impact from Health Centers can often extend beyond the health outcomes. Not only do Health Centers employ hundreds of thousands of people, but they also boost economic activity by purchasing goods and services from local businesses—all while assisting millions more. 2 Their ability to help power local economies, while simultaneously improving the health of its residents, showcases their extensive and overwhelming significance.3
As 2013’s National Health Center Week approaches, there has never been a better time to emphasize the lasting impact our Health Centers have on our communities. This year National Health Center Week’s (NHCW) theme is “Celebrating America’s Health Centers: Transforming Health Care in Our Local Communities”, focusing on the dedication to innovation within Health Centers; continuously finding ways to modify and advance the health of their communities.3
Every year NHCW designates three days during the week to acknowledge special populations served by Health Centers. 3 This year’s are:
Public Housing Health Centers Day - Tuesday, August 13
Health Care for the Homeless Day - Wednesday, August 14
Farmworker Health Day - Thursday, August 15
And as every year, NHCW encourages you to join them in celebrating the efforts of our community Health Centers. To find a comprehensive list of events and see what may be occurring in your area, visit the NHCW events page. 4
At Coast2Coast Rx, we recognize the significance of NHCW as our goals of providing families with discounted prescriptions and health services align with NHCW’s aim to afford families the “high quality, cost effective, accessible care” they deserve. 2 Coast2Coast Rx invites community Health Centers to request a free supply of discount prescription cards for their consumers to further ensure their access to more affordable prescriptions and health care services.
Do you have a story of an experience at a health center to share? How has a local health center impacted you or your community? Join NHCW and Coast2Coast Rx this August 11th-17th in commending and appreciating Health Centers nationwide for their services, and for reminding us all that our health is invaluable.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has dedicated the week of November 12 – November 18, 2012 to recognizing the importance of appropriate antibiotic use1. The week is comprised of efforts from the Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work campaign, state-based appropriate antibiotic use campaigns, non-profit partners, and for-profit partners1. Consumers may have become familiar with antibiotic resistance; which has happened due to increased use of antibiotics—the drugs have been used to help fight disease and sickness for so long that the bacteria have adapted and the medications don’t work as well. This week, CDC’s goal is to help raise awareness and educate patients and doctors alike about appropriate antibiotic use.
The aims of this campaign are to help reduce antibiotic resistance by promoting adherence to prescribing guidelines among providers, decreasing demand for antibiotics for viral upper respiratory infections among healthy adults and parents of young children; and increasing adherence to prescribed antibiotics for viral upper respiratory infections.
Did you know?
According to the CDC, more than 50% of antibiotics are unnecessarily prescribed in office setting for upper respiratory infections, most of which are caused by viruses2.
Up to 50% of antibiotic use in hospitals is either unnecessary or inappropriate2.
In children, reactions to antibiotics are the most common cause of emergency department visits for adverse drug events2.
Healthcare providers must take a leadership position in this campaign to help educate their patients and prescribe medications accordingly. It is essential that healthcare providers work with each other to make sure that the patients understand when a prescription for antibiotics is needed and why they may not need one. The CDC encourages healthcare providers to make sure that an antibiotic prescription is absolutely necessary in order to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance3 (and you can learn more by reading a helpful chart here!).
Antibiotic resistance does not only affect the person taking the medication but also the people around them. If the bacteria has adapted to the medication it is possible for it to infect another person2. The CDC has all of this information and more on their website including fact sheets, planning materials and toolkits to help launch your Get Smart About Antibiotics Week.
Here at Coast2Coast Rx we recognize that these health services and prescriptions cost money and we want to make sure you get the medication you need, so don’t forget to keep that Coast2Coast Rx discount card somewhere convenient!
Come by and say “hello” on our Facebook and our Twitter pages, we’d love to hear from you.
applauds the efforts of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in recognition of American Pharmacists Month. APhA, a nonprofit professional organization representing more than 62,000 pharmacists and others in related professions, organizes the annual awareness campaign to serve as a reminder that pharmacies play an important role in helping consumers maintain their health, and that pharmacists make vital contributions to health education in their communities.1

The dedicated work of pharmacists is essential to the overall health and wellness of American consumers.  Pharmacists often serve as a point-of-contact for patients, helping them understand the proper use of medications and offering referrals.  Oftentimes, a pharmacist is “the first line of defense” for a patient.
Community pharmacists in particular can play an important role for their customers. In many communities, an independent pharmacy may offer not only prescription fills but also vital health services such as blood pressure monitoring, diabetes training and immunizations, says the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), an organization that helps to represent and advocate for the owners of more than 23,000 independent community pharmacies.2

Are you planning a visit to your local chain or independent pharmacy? Pharmacists and their patients are encouraged to have open dialogue about previous medications and health conditions, and the recommended use of their current prescriptions. The providers of the Coast2Coast Rx card encourage consumers to thank their pharmacist for their insight and professionalism.
Do you have a story about your favorite pharmacist or pharmacy experience? Share it with us on Facebook and Twitter. To print a card and to find participating pharmacies in your area, visit the Coast2Coast Rx website today.

Red Ribbon Week, October 20th -28th, 2012, is an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. Communities all across the United States can come together and take a stand against underage drug use. Businesses, communities, schools, and parents come together to provide special educational programs to teach children the dangers of underage drug use.
The National Family Partnership (NFP) is the national sponsor of the Red Ribbon Campaign. NFP has been involved with drug prevention education since 1980. Its mission is to “lead and support our nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug free youth.”1
According to the DEA website, “Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse.”2 There are many resources available to make your Red Ribbon Week a success. The NFP provides a planning guide and a tool kit to help you get started.
An important start to your Red Ribbon Week is right inside your home. AssistGuide Information Services (AGIS) gives some helpful tips on safely storing and using your medication. AGIS suggests that you should store all of your medication in a central location together and that they are stored in their original bottles so they don’t get mixed up, and points out that you should throw away any medication that your physician has discontinued or has expired.3
It is vital to our communities, especially young people, to be educated on the dangers of underage and illegal drug use. Coast2Coast Rx encourages families to get outside and do productive activities such as a bike ride in the park, a family outing to the great outdoors or even a nice quiet game night at home can help engage children and young adults and keep them away from dangerous lifestyles. And as always, when it comes to prescription drugs needed to improve your family’s health, Coast2Coast Rx is a great resource to help you save significantly on thousands of commonly-prescribed medications.
Coast2Coast Rx applauds the work of the organizers of nationally recognized Red Ribbon Week, who have educated communities about drug abuse prevention for many years. We encourage families, classrooms, and communities to use the tools provided by Red Ribbon Week to learn more about drug safety and prevention.
