It can be hard to eat healthy at work when you know there are cookies in the vending machine and pizza in the cafeteria. Find it hard to fit in a meal? I have just the thing!

Sometimes it’s hard to fit in meals during busy days filled with classes and interning. It seems easier to just skip meals but in the end that’s not the healthy way to go. In order to keep your energy up you need to take in adequate nutrients. Here’s a recipe for a quick and easy shake that you can take with you and is filled with tons of protein for those long days.
Proper nutrition is crucial to every child's health and development, but increased exposure to media and advertisements can be a poor influence on children's food choices, and hidden changes in the food supply can make it difficult for even the best-intentioned parents to make wise food choices.

According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), children between the ages of two and eleven see ten or more television advertisements for food per day, many of them for consumables that are poor dietary choices -- calorie-dense, nutrient-poor processed and fast foods.

Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that 17 percent of American children and teens are overweight or even obese. And diets high in processed foods have been linked to lower IQ by epidemiologists.

Parents can combat the influence of food advertising by including children in family food decisions. One key skill involved in making these decisions is reading labels. Packaged foods, even those containing organic ingredients, often contain large quantities of calorie-dense, nutrition-poor ingredients, such as sugar.

Whenever considering a packaged food, parents and children should read the label together, avoiding foods with unrecognizable chemical ingredients, as well as those with sugar high on the ingredient list.

Even whole foods merit label-reading to help families choose foods low in pesticide residue and high in nutrients. According to the USDA, certified organic foods are those "food[s] or other agricultural product[s] ... produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering may not be used."

Studies around the world have found organically grown foods to be higher in nutrient content than those grown according to conventional methods. Organic foods can be more expensive, so parents who cannot afford to buy everything organic can use guides such as the one produced by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) to choose non-organic foods that are naturally lower in pesticide residue. The EWG's guide is available online.

In addition to online resources, many local resources are available to help families plan meals together. One important place to teach children about food is the local farmers market; parents can find local farmers markets by searching online at www.FarmersMarket.com. Even when the farmers markets are closed, services such as Pure Sprouts of Trexlertown offer online shopping for delivery of organic meat, dairy, and produce to Lehigh Valley residences and offices.
